TELACU Education Foundation




Dedicated to placing higher education within the reach of bright Latino students in Los Angeles, the Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) corporation that offers a full range of services designed to help Latino high school and college students achieve academic and professional success.



These services are provided through a variety of programs including: a scholarship program, a retention and leadership program, internships, mentorships and an educational resource center.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The TELACU Education Foundation's Scholarship Program helps Latino college students in the Los Angeles area to attend Southern California colleges and universities. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,500 per year, and special awards of up to $10,000 are available to students in engineering, education and post-graduate law or public administration.

Requirements: Students must be from Los Angeles city, unincorporated East Los Angeles or the cities/communities of Montebello, Commerce, Bell Gardens or Monterey Park. They must attend one of 17 participating colleges: The Cal State campuses of Fullerton, Los Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge and Cal Poly, Pomona; Azusa Pacific University, East L.A. College, Loyola Marymount, Mount St. Mary's, Harvey Mudd, Occidental, Pepperdine, University of La Verne, UC Irvine and UCLA, USC and Whittier College.

INTERNSHIPS

The TELACU Internship Program places college students in business, professional and government settings, where they can explore potential careers, learn the educational requirements for entering those careers and supplement their income with internship stipends. Opportunities are currently available with Sears, AETNA, SCAG, LFC Insurance and the Washington Center in Washington D.C. For more information, call Veronica Soliz at (213) 721-1655.

MENTORSHIPS

The Foundation is seeking individuals, preferably college graduates, to serve as role models and mentors to college students from the greater Los Angeles area. If you're interested in becoming a mentor, please call Veronica Soliz at (213) 721-1655 for an application.

EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER

Located at TELACU's East Los Angeles headquarters and staff by a full-time counselor, the Center provides educational advisement, supplemented by a complete reference library and computer database on post secondary programs; GED preparation; and scholarships, grants and loans. The Center is also the focal point for ongoing bilingual workshops for parents and students on college selection, the admissions process and financial aid, as well as training and counseling. Internet access is also offered in the computer laboratory. Counseling and Internet access is by appointment only. Please call (213) 838-8955.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Attention Veterans

TELACU Veterans Upward Bound is a free educational program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the TELACU Education Foundation. The Program provides college preparation courses free of charge. Basic Math/English Skills Classes; GED and College Admission Assistance; Study Skills Development; Financial Aid Information; Academic Counseling and Assessment; Tutoring; and Referrals to College Programs and Community Services.
